Aluminium Longspan roofing sheets from Ideal Roofing System

Ideal Roofing System is an aluminium roofing sheet supplier and installer at 83 Dopemu Rd, Orile Agege, Lagos, and has been in business since 2009, delivering nationwide to every part of Nigeria. We corrugate Longspan, Steptiles and Metrocopo in-house, in Market and Caliper grade, with every gauge from 0.40mm to 0.70mm in stock. Our materials are SON-certified, and we are a registered business (BN 7788277).

This guide is for anyone about to buy aluminium roofing sheets in Nigeria: homeowners, builders, site engineers and contractors. It shows what to check before you pay any supplier, so the sheets that reach your site are the ones you ordered. For today's prices, see our aluminium roofing sheet price list, which we update every month.

Why the supplier matters as much as the sheet

Two aluminium sheets can carry the same label and still be very different. Thickness, coating and the accuracy of the corrugation all affect how long your roof lasts and whether it leaks. A good supplier tells you plainly what you are buying. A careless one sells you a 0.55mm sheet that is really thinner, then disappears when the roof starts to leak. A few checks before payment save you a lot of trouble later.

Checklist: how to choose an aluminium roofing sheet supplier

1. Ask for the gauge and the grade in writing

Gauge is the thickness of the sheet (0.40mm, 0.45mm, 0.55mm, 0.70mm and so on). Grade tells you how close the real thickness is to the label. In the Nigerian market you will hear two grades:

  • Caliper (industrial) grade matches the stated thickness closely and costs more.
  • Market grade is thinner than the labelled gauge and is the common budget option for most homes.

Both are fine when you know which one you are paying for. Ask the supplier to write the gauge and the grade on your quotation and receipt. If they won't, treat it as a warning sign.

2. Verify the thickness yourself

Don't rely on the label alone. Before the sheets leave the supplier's yard, or when they arrive on site, measure a few sheets from different parts of the bundle with a micrometer or vernier caliper. Compare the reading with what is on your receipt. Allow for the grade you paid for: Market grade will read thinner than its label, while Caliper grade should be very close to it. If the readings are well below what you were promised, don't offload the sheets until it is sorted out.

3. Check for SON certification

Ask whether the materials are certified by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON). Certified sheets have been tested to a national standard. That gives you more confidence in the coating and the metal, and something to refer to if there is a dispute.

4. Find out who does the corrugation

A supplier that corrugates in-house controls the profile, the length and the finish. That means sheets cut to your exact roof lengths, fewer joints on long runs, and less waste. Ask to see the profiles you want (Longspan, Steptiles or Metrocopo) before you order.

5. Confirm stock of the gauge you need

If the supplier doesn't have your gauge, you may be pushed into a thinner or thicker sheet than your roof needs. Ask whether your exact gauge is in stock today, not coming next week.

6. Get delivery terms clearly

If your site is outside the supplier's city, ask:

  • Do you deliver to my state?
  • How will the sheets be packed and protected on the way?
  • Who pays if sheets arrive bent or scratched?

Get the answers before you pay, not after the truck leaves.

7. Ask about installation and warranty

Sheets alone don't make a roof. Poor installation causes more leaks than poor sheets. Ask whether the supplier can install, whether the installers are trained, and whether there is a written warranty against leakage on work they install. Find out how long the warranty lasts and what it covers.

8. Use the right gauge for your structure

Thicker is not always better. On timber roof frames, very thick Caliper sheets add weight the woodwork may not be designed for. As a guide:

  • Homes on timber frames: 0.45mm Caliper grade is a strong all-round choice. 0.55mm Market grade or 0.55mm Caliper grade are also good options.
  • Avoid Caliper gauges thicker than 0.55mm on wooden frames.
  • Steel-framed warehouses and industrial buildings: 0.45mm, 0.55mm or 0.70mm Caliper grade.

If you are unsure, send your roof plan to a roofing expert before buying.

9. Watch for underweight or fake sheets

Signs to watch for:

  • a price that is far below what everyone else quotes for the same gauge and grade
  • a supplier who won't write the gauge and grade on the receipt
  • sheets that feel noticeably light or flexible for their stated gauge
  • mixed thicknesses within one bundle

When you see any of these, measure before you pay.

Which gauge of aluminium roofing sheet should I buy?

For a house on a timber frame, 0.45mm Caliper grade is a strong all-round choice. 0.55mm Market or Caliper grade also works well. Avoid Caliper gauges thicker than 0.55mm on wooden frames. For steel-framed warehouses, use 0.45mm, 0.55mm or 0.70mm Caliper grade.

How do I know a sheet is the real gauge?

Ask for the gauge and the grade in writing, then measure a few sheets with a micrometer or vernier caliper before offloading. Caliper grade should read very close to its label. Market grade is thinner than its labelled gauge.
