The phrase "aluminium roofing sheet" is basically used to describe any metallic roofing material, that is composed mainly of pure aluminium and slight impurities also known as alloys.

Types of Aluminium Roofing Sheets In Nigeria.

In Nigeria today, aluminium roofs are classified into 3 categories, based on their corrugation. Although, other categories are beginning to emerge, we shall focus on the three most popular types namely;

• Longspan
• Steptiles
• Metcoppo/Metrocopo

Aluminium longspan

According to Design Buildings, long-span roofs are generally defined as roofs that extend beyond 12 m in length. While this is the global standard, the Nigerian roofing market uses the term a bit differently. In Nigeria, longspan roofing sheets typically refer to corrugated aluminium sheets without steps, produced in various lengths starting from about 2.4 m and above.

Aluminium longspan roofing sheets are widely praised for their excellent water‑drainage capability, especially during heavy rainfall. This makes them a preferred choice for flat or low‑slope roof designs. Their durability, lightweight nature, and resistance to corrosion have also contributed to their popularity in both industrial and residential construction across the country.

These roofing sheets are manufactured by corrugating aluminium flat-sheet coils, which may be locally produced or imported—most commonly from China. The quality, thickness, coating, and durability of the sheets often depend on the source of the aluminium coil.

Types of Aluminium Longspan

Aluminium Longspan Roofing Sheets are divided into 2 main types stemming from their width.

They are;

• Metra(l) Design
• Normal Design

Aluminium Metra(l) Design

Metral aluminium longspan roofing sheets are a type of longspan roofing sheet designed with a standard width of 1 m.

They feature wider but fewer (5) gutters, allowing them to cover more surface area per sheet. Because of this increased coverage, they help reduce the total quantity of roofing sheets required, especially when calculated in Total Running Metres (TRM). Metral sheets are commonly used for roofing hip roofs and gable roofs due to their efficiency and clean aesthetic.

Aluminium Normal Design 

Normal aluminium longspan roofing sheets are a type of longspan roofing sheet designed with a standard width of 0.9 m.

They feature narrower but more gutters, allowing for proper water-runoff. They cover less surface area per sheet and as a result, an increase in the total quantity of roofing sheet is usually noticed.

Normal sheets are commonly used for roofing flat roofs and industrial roofs.

Aluminium Metcoppo/Metrocopo, just like steptiles, are produced from high grade aluminium coils which are also mechanically corrugated to step-profiled sheets. 

Aluminium Metcoppo is considered by many to be the most beautiful aluminium design because of the bamboo-like appearance it gives.

The aluminium metcoppo roofing sheet has an effective cover width of approximately 0.98 m and can be roll‑formed into custom lengths, similar to longspan aluminium roofing sheets and steptiles aluminium roofing sheets previously discussed.
