Why Nigeria's climate is hard on roofs

Relentless heat

In Lagos or Abuja, the roof takes the full force of the sun, and a material that conducts heat quickly passes it straight into your living space. Lesso's own test data puts the thermal conductivity of its ASA synthetic resin tile at 0.325 W/m·K, and of its ASAPVC roof sheet at 0.29 W/m·K. Put simply, less of the afternoon heat reaches your ceiling.

Heavy rainfall

Our rainy seasons test every overlap and fixing point. The Roma Roof Sheet was developed specifically "for areas with heavy rainfall". It has a large 55 mm wave height to speed up drainage and improve waterproofing. Lesso also describes its resin tiles as dense and non-absorbent, so water cannot seep in through micropores.

Salty, corrosive coastal air

Lekki, Victoria Island, Ikoyi, Ajah and other waterside areas are tough on metal roofs. In Lesso's laboratory tests, its ASA resin tiles showed no chemical reaction after 24 hours' immersion in salt, alkali and various acids below 60% concentration. Lesso specifically recommends its ASAPVC and UPVC sheets for coastal regions and areas affected by acid rain. Resin is a non-metal, so there is nothing to rust.

Rain noise

This is the benefit our clients notice first. Lesso states that its ASAPVC roof sheet reduces external noise from heavy rain and strong winds by more than 25 dB compared with colour-steel tiles. It makes a similar claim for its UPVC sheet against metal, zinc and aluminium tiles.

What exactly is an ASA synthetic resin roof tile?

ASA (acrylonitrile styrene acrylate) is an engineering plastic known for strong weather resistance. Lesso uses it as the top surface of its premium tiles. Underneath, the brochure describes a four-layer composite structure:

1. Anti-ageing layer – the ASA surface that resists UV, moisture, heat and cold
2. Shading layer
3. Thermal-insulation layer
4. Abrasion-resistance layer

According to Lesso, this build gives:

• Colour that lasts: in outdoor exposure in high-sunlight regions (Arizona and Florida, USA), ten-year colour change was kept below ΔE 5
• Heat resistance up to 65°C for the ASA surface layer
• Impact strength: withstands a 1 kg steel ball dropped from 3 m without breaking
• Load-bearing: takes a 150 kg load over a 660 mm support span without cracking
• Fire performance: classified as flame-retardant, tested by Chinese national fire authorities to GB 8624-2006, achieving a B1 rating
• Self-cleaning: resists dust, and rain washes it clean
• Safer materials: no asbestos, fibreglass or radioactive elements, and recyclable

Resin roofing performs only as well as its installation. Lesso's guidance is specific. Purlin spacing must match the sheet thickness and roof shape. Screws go on the wave crest with waterproof caps. Holes are pre-drilled to allow for expansion, and sheets are fixed in sequence from one end. Our installers follow these rules on every job, because your roof is our proof.

Frequently asked questions

Are resin roof tiles good for Nigeria's hot climate?

Yes. Resin is a poor conductor of heat. Lesso's tests give its ASA resin tile a thermal conductivity of 0.325 W/m·K, which helps keep heat from passing into the building. The ASA surface also resists UV, heat and moisture.

Are resin tiles noisy when it rains?

They are much quieter than metal. Lesso describes its resin tiles as having good sound insulation against heavy rain and strong winds. For its ASAPVC and UPVC roof sheets, Lesso reports a noise reduction of more than 25 dB compared with metal colour-steel tiles.

Will Lesso resin tiles rust or corrode near the sea?

Resin contains no metal, so it cannot rust. In Lesso's tests, the tiles showed no chemical reaction after 24 hours in salt, alkali and acid solutions, and Lesso recommends them for coastal regions.
