This guide is for homeowners, builders and contractors who are about to buy stone coated roofing tiles, also called Gerard, stonetiles or metro tiles. It covers what to check before you pay any supplier. For today's rates, see our stone coated (Gerard) price list, which we update every month.
Why the supplier matters with stone coated tiles
Stone coated tiles are aluminium-zinc coated steel finished with stone chips. Two tiles can look the same in a showroom and still differ in steel thickness, coating and how well the chips are bonded. Many sheets on the market are sold as 0.55mm but fall below that standard. Stone coated roofs are also harder to install than aluminium, so the people who fit them matter as much as the tiles. A good supplier is clear about all of this before you pay.
Checklist: how to choose a stone coated roofing tile supplier
1. Get the gauge in writing
Stone coated tiles are commonly sold in 0.50mm, 0.55mm and 0.65mm. Ask the supplier to write the gauge, design and colour on your quotation and receipt. If they won't, treat that as a warning sign.
2. Check the weight and the base steel
Ask what the tile is made from and what it weighs. The common stone coated tiles in Nigeria weigh around 3 to 5kg per square metre, while original Gerard tiles weigh around 7kg per square metre. A tile that feels very light for its stated gauge is worth measuring before you accept it.
3. Look closely at the stone chip finish
Pick up a few tiles from different bundles. The chips should be evenly spread and firmly bonded, with no bare patches and no chips that rub off easily on your hand. Patchy chips fade and wear unevenly once the roof is up.
4. Ask where the tiles are from
Origin affects quality and price. Tiles made to New Zealand standard usually cost more than many imports from elsewhere. Ask which standard the tiles meet, and check that every bundle on your order is the same one.
5. Make sure your design and colour are in stock for the whole roof
Colour and texture can vary between batches. Order the full quantity of one design and colour at once, from one batch if you can, so the roof doesn't end up with mismatched sections. Ask whether your exact design and gauge are in stock today. Some designs and gauges are always limited.
6. Order the accessories from the same supplier
A stone coated roof needs matching accessories as well as tiles. Get them from the same supplier, in the same colour and finish, so the details match the rest of the roof and fit properly.

7. Check who installs, and how
Stone coated tiles interlock and are fixed onto battens, so they need trained installers. Poor fixing causes leaks and makes later repairs harder, because the roof is hard to walk on. Ask whether the supplier has its own installers, whether they have done your design before, and whether you can see photos of completed jobs.

8. Ask about warranty in writing
Ask two questions: what warranty the supplier gives on its own installation work, and what the manufacturer says about the tiles. Get both answers in writing, including how long they last and what they cover.
9. Watch for warning signs
- a price far below what others quote for the same design and gauge
- a supplier who won't put the gauge or design on the receipt
- tiles that feel noticeably light or flexible for their stated gauge
- mixed colours or chip finishes within one order
When you see any of these, check the tiles before you pay or offload.
Choosing a design: Milano, Bond, Romania and others
Every design uses the same kind of stone coated steel. What changes is the look and how the tile lays:
- Milano is a large Mediterranean-style tile. Its size means fewer pieces and less labour on big roofs.
- Bond is known for strong interlocking, which gives a firm, cohesive cover that resists displacement.

- Romania is one of our premium designs, stocked in 0.55mm and 0.65mm.

- Shingle uses small overlapping pieces that follow complex roof contours well.

- Roman has a curved tile with an interlocking system that channels rainwater.
- Classic has a traditional, rustic look and is one of the simpler designs to install.
Bond and Classic are usually the most budget-friendly. See every design on real roofs on our completed projects page.

Frequently asked questions
Where can I buy stone coated roofing tiles in Lagos?
At the Ideal Roofing System showroom, 83 Dopemu Rd, Orile Agege, Lagos (Monday-Friday 8am-6pm, Saturday 9am-4pm), or order on WhatsApp (08059431517). We stock Bond, Classic, Milano, Shingle, Roman and Romania designs.
Which stone coated design is best?
It depends on the look you want and your budget. Bond and Classic are usually the most budget-friendly. Milano suits large roofs, Shingle suits complex roof shapes, and Roman and Romania give a more premium finish.
Do you deliver stone coated tiles outside Lagos?
Yes. We deliver nationwide, to every part of Nigeria. Send your location on WhatsApp for a delivery quote.
Milano vs Bond vs Romania: which should I choose?
Milano is a large tile that cuts down the number of pieces and labour on big roofs. Bond has strong interlocking for a firm cover. Romania is a premium design, stocked in 0.55mm and 0.65mm. All three are the same kind of stone coated steel, so the choice is mainly about look and budget.
What gauge of stone coated tile should I buy?
We stock 0.50mm, 0.55mm and 0.65mm. Thicker tiles are sturdier and cost more. Many sheets sold as 0.55mm fall below that standard, so get the gauge in writing and check it before offloading.
Do you install stone coated roofs?
Yes. Our trained in-house team installs stone coated roofs, and every roof we complete has a 1-year warranty against leakage.
